Description

1. Scythe: The series begins in a future society where humanity has achieved immortality, eradicating disease, aging, and death. However, to control population growth, a group of individuals known as Scythes are given the authority to end lives. Two teenagers, Citra Terranova and Rowan Damisch, are chosen as apprentices to a Scythe, but only one of them can earn the title. As they learn the grim responsibilities of their new role, they uncover dark secrets within the Scythedom, setting the stage for a moral and philosophical battle that will shape the future.

2. Thunderhead: In the sequel, the Thunderhead—an all-knowing AI that governs society—oversees everything except the Scythedom. As tensions within the Scythedom escalate and corruption spreads, Citra and Rowan find themselves on opposite sides of a growing conflict. The Thunderhead, unable to intervene directly, struggles with the limitations of its role, leading to unforeseen consequences. This book delves deeper into the moral complexities of a world without death, as the stakes rise and the characters face impossible choices.

3. The Toll: The trilogy reaches its epic conclusion in The Toll, where the consequences of the events in Thunderhead come to a head. The world is on the brink of chaos, with the Scythedom fractured and the Thunderhead's influence diminished. Citra, Rowan, and their allies must navigate a dangerous landscape of power struggles, rebellion, and unforeseen alliances. As secrets are revealed and the fate of humanity hangs in the balance, the characters must confront the ultimate questions of life, death, and what it means to be truly free.

4. Gleanings: This companion book offers a collection of short stories set in the world of the Arc of a Scythe series. Gleanings provides readers with deeper insights into the lives of various Scythes, the history of the Scythedom, and the broader implications of the society Neal Shusterman has created. Each story expands on the themes of the series, exploring the complexities of morality, power, and the human condition in a world where death is no longer inevitable.

The Arc of a Scythe series is a masterful exploration of ethics, mortality, and power, blending intense action with philosophical questions that linger long after the final page. Neal Shusterman's world-building and storytelling make this collection a compelling read for anyone who enjoys thought-provoking dystopian fiction.
